STICHTING CHEB GEBBETJE & MUSICIANS CAFÉ DE PATER

Achterom 8, The Hague – Café de Pater (the Priest) opens its doors in 1986, in an area called Achterom in the centre of the Hague. Since then, de Pater has become one of the Hague’s most active musical podiums. In the beginning de Pater was no different to any other pub, but in time the focus turned to music and soon musicians and music-lovers would make up the regulars. Initially, Rhythm and Blues ruled the program with performances by local bands. After a few years, with an increasingly varied audience, and a rising amount of visitors we have been able to extend our live program to four nights a week. Our program now consists of a jazz, salsa, pop, funk and reggae.

Het resultaat is een actief podium waar profs en amateurs zes dagen per week live hun muziek brengen. De Pater organiseert en programmeert alle concerten, sessies en workshops samen met de stichting Cheb Gebbetje. Deze stichting stelt zich tot doel muzikanten podiumervaring op te laten doen en biedt ervaren muzikanten de mogelijkheid nieuwe dingen uit te proberen. Creativiteit is waar het om gaat: Creativiteit komt voort uit het kind-zijn van de mens. Niet voor niets wordt muziek gespeeld. De spelende mens is goed, want de mens kan beter in een hardrockband spelen dan tijd verdoen met tramhokjes slopen...of een jazzarrangement ontwikkelen in plaats van een hartkwaal...of zich uiten in een songtekst of een improvisatie.

De stichting Cheb Gebbetje biedt muzikanten niet alleen een podium, maar ook de mogelijkheid om het professionele muziekcircuit te leren kennen tijdens concerten, sessies en workshops. Goed voorbeeld doet goed volgen; Stichting Cheb Gebbetje vraagt van haar workshopleiders en sessieleiders naast professionaliteit ook creativiteit en vernieuwing. Het stimuleren en ontwikkelen van eigen werk, geluid en stijl is belangrijker dan het rücksichtlos naspelen van de top40allertijden.

Als muzikanten samen komen zijn daar nu ook mensen van buitenlandse afkomst bij. Hoewel de opzet oorspronkelijk niet multicultureel was, is met de komst van deze muzikanten gebleken dat muziek één taal is met vele dialecten, maar altijd verstaanbaar voor een luisterend oor. De muzikale ontmoeting tussen mensen met verschillende culturele achtergronden heeft al heel wat verrassend muzikaal vuurwerk opgeleverd!

De Pater en Cheb Gebbetje willen een broedplaats creëren waar "Iive" muziek zich kan blijven ontwikkelen en vernieuwen.

Wednesday - Pop workshop & Pater Session

Joaquin Lorenzo leads the Pop workshop every Wednesday at 19:30. He will share the do’s and don’ts of contemporary Pop music.

The Pater Session starts at 23:00. You can expect to be taken in by the rhythm and a night filled with musical adventure. De Pater has been around since 1986 and is a breeding ground for today’s talent.

Many musicians from the Hague have started their careers in de Pater. This session is for performances of varying levels. You’re welcome to join, even if you’re not quite the pop star yet.

Thursday – Worldmusic session

Every Thursday night our Worldmusic session takes off at 23:00. Students of Rotterdam’s Music Academy regularly fill the night with their sound, but we also welcome others who are interested in contributing or learning the ways of Worldmusic.

Many bands have started with us and some of our passed performers have even made it to the famous North Sea Jazz festival.

Friday – Jazz Podium

We host a Jazz concert every Friday night at 23:00. The program will consist of contemporary jazz and a variety of alternative jazz styles.

Saturday – Closed

Sunday – Funk Night

The best way to end the week is with a funk night. The stage will be taken over by a funk band where they will stay deep into the night.

Want to join? Sign up with the bandleader. (However, we do expect a certain level of skill with this style of music if you want to join.)

Many bands were born on this night, finally allowed to take the stage and use it to it’s full potential. Especially younger musicians have explored our podium and gained the skills to play funk or jazz funk.
